Established Legacy (Since the 1975)
Mejiro Gym Amsterdam traces its roots back to the mid-1970s and officially opened its own location at Lauriergracht 86 in 1978. It was founded by martial arts pioneer Jan Plas, who learned kickboxing from Kenji Kurosaki at the original Mejiro Gym in Tokyo. Upon his return, Plas, along with early students like Lucien Carbin and Johan Vos, opened the Amsterdam branch, giving rise to the renowned “Mejiro-style” of kickboxing.
Birthplace of Dutch Kickboxing
Mejiro Gym is recognized as the birthplace of Dutch kickboxing, a fighting style known for its combination of speed, powerful low kicks, and disciplined technique. The gym became one of the “big three” in the Netherlands, alongside Chakuriki and Vos Gym.
World-Class Fighters and Coaches
Over the decades, Mejiro Gym has developed some of the world’s greatest kickboxers:
- Legends like Rob Kaman, Peter Aerts, Remy Bonjasky, Andy Souwer, and more have trained there.
- After Jan Plas, André Mannaart, a multiple-time world champion, took over coaching duties and continued nurturing global stars.
